Lifetime Memberships
Several
Chapter Members have worked hard on behalf of the Chapter through the
years. For their considerable
contributions of time and effort, Mike Burneson, the late Jerry Fulghum, Mike
Chiurato, Carey Haughy, Dale Nies, Gordon Coleman, Wes Bender, Bill Warfield
and the late Rudy Christians were awarded Lifetime Memberships in the Golden
West Chapter.
Chapter Communications
Prior
to 1990, communication with the membership was through mailed flyers and memos.
In 1990, Dick Love initiated the regular publication of a chapter newsletter
and named it The Primer. Dick edited The Primer from 1990 until early in
1995. John Givogri filled in as editor
for a few issues, assisted by Gordon Coleman.
In 1996, Randy Messer and Gordon Coleman handled the editorial duties. In 1997 Wes Bender took on the role of
editor. After 15 years, in 2012, Wes
stepped down and Mike Burneson took over the editorial duties. Mike continued as editor until the Chapter’s
dissolution at the end of 2021.
At the
end of 2006, as publishing, printing and mailing costs were eating up a large
part of the advertising income, Wes Bender established a chapter website. This allowed The Primer to be distributed electronically and also provided a
venue for the further distribution of information to the membership.
In
addition to the regular articles provided by the Chapter Presidents, various
members contributed articles through the years.
Contributors included Lake Herman Mike (live at the rock), Dick Love,
Gordon Coleman, Bill Warfield, Bruce Redpath, Linda Nies, the late Ed Criley,
Jock Masson, Tim Hurley and Wes Bender.
The Primer was awarded the
ISEE’s Chapter Newsletter Award at the annual ISEE conferences in 1993, 2001,
2002, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. After
2019, the award was renamed by the ISEE to the Communications Award to include
chapter websites. The Primer and the
Chapter website received that award at the ISEE Conference in 2020 and again in
2022. Issues of The Primer from 2007 through 2021 can be found in the Newsletter
Archive on this site.
Sponsors
Through
the years, advertisers played a very large part in making it possible for us to
publish our newsletters and to provide scholarships for needy students. Several
loyal individuals stand out because they were with us for many, many years. We
would be remiss if we didn’t thank Bruce
Redpath of Redpath Geophysics, Charline
“Charlie” Pollard of Nobel Insurance Services, Don Belden of Neil’s Controlled Blasting, the late Brad Langner and Lars Johansen with Alpha Explosives and Ron Mask of Instantel, to name a few. Many others came and went over time. We appreciated all of you. Thank you for your
support!
Last, but Not Least…..
If you
scan the charts and lists of folks who contributed greatly to the success of
the Golden West Chapter, a few names stand out above the rest. One person made the mistake of going to the
men’s room at the wrong time at the 2010 membership meeting. Having been promptly nominated and quickly elected
President in his absence, Mike Chiurato
accepted the challenge and went on to serve in that position for the next 11
years. Mike was instrumental in
arranging all of the Chapter’s fund raising clay-shoots. Although he wasn’t railroaded into serving as
the Chapter’s Treasurer, the late Gerald
“Jerry” Fulghum,
performed that duty for 20 years. In
addition to keeping the books and filing the tax returns, Jerry also managed
the Scholarship program. Secretaries who served multiple terms were Carey Haughy, Danniell Edwards, Joe Stack
and Gordon Coleman. It was hard to tell where Gordon was going to
show up next. He served as President, Secretary (11 years) and Treasurer in
addition to serving on the Board. One member who mostly worked quietly behind
the scenes was Mike Burneson. He served as President and also served many
terms on the Board. You might recognize
him as the Editor of The Primer, a
job he performed admirably. However, few
know that without Mike, the Chapter might have disappeared much sooner. When the chips were down and other Officers
were tied up with pressing business matters, Mike always stepped in and got the
job done. He was the one who assembled
the Chapter’s annual report for the past few years. He was the one who set up the Zoom meetings
when it wasn’t possible to meet in person. Mike is also well known for his cooking
prowess and served as the Chapter’s resident chef at the Annual Business
Meeting dinners and at the Clay Shoots. Wes
Bender was instrumental in starting the Chapter and assisted where he could
throughout its life. He made the mistake
of not disappearing from the scene when he retired in 2002. He was still around at the end and is the one
who is responsible for this website.
